Reflection
Having been in education for more than 15 years, I understand my responsibility as a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse and neglect. I also feel it is important to realize what social, cultural and economic influences have on abuse. While taking the Child Development class, I wrote a paper that outlines this understanding and how I as an educator have both a moral and legal responsibility to report any suspicion of this behavior.
I have been trained in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Shaken Baby Syndrome. In my many years of working with children, I am fortunate to have never encountered SIDS or SBS. However, I do feel this training has properly informed me of warning signs, prevention strategies and how I can educate families about these syndromes.
Understanding the importance of the health, safety and nutrition guidelines for childcare facilities is something I take seriously. These guidelines are important to follow for the welfare of everyone within a childcare facility. To me, nutrition is extremely important for children and has a huge effect on a child's health and demeanor. A paper that I wrote while in the Health and Safety course shows my understanding of these guidelines and how they require constant review to assure the facility I work for and all of it's employees meet them.
Proper nutrition for children is not only healthy, but an expectation through the Wisconsin Department of Health & Family Services. I believe my experience working with the food program and planning nutritional means for a childcare facility shows my ability to plan nutritious meals and snacks. I have an example of this in the following artifact which is a weekly menu for a preschool classroom.
Through my health, safety and nutrition class, I learned the importance of proper sanitation. There are many things to consider when providing appropriate sanitation. It is necessary to follow certain steps and understand the universal precautions when doing so. I feel the paper written about sanitary procedures shows my understanding and ability to meet sanitation regulations.
